Western North Carolina has some of the best Autumn Color anywhere. The biodiversity and elevation changes found in WNC create one of the longest "leaf season" anywhere in the USA. Most years you will find peak color starting the first week of October at the higher elevations and can simply follow the peak down the mountains to the lower elevations each week, until early November when it reaches the lowest elevations. Not many places have almost 6000 feet of elevations with the diversity of deciduous trees we have here!
